How you benefit from knowing your benefits
Participants get a lot of value from their benefits, but it is important to use those benefits wisely. Here are some ways to save money while keeping the Professional Musicians, Local 47 & Employers’ Health & Welfare Fund strong for everyone:
Brand name vs. generic prescriptions
Choosing a known brand of medication may seem like the obvious choice, but lesser-known and less-expensive generic drugs often do the job just as well.
Generic drugs are put through the same rigorous approval procedures as more expensive drugs, and they often produce the same results at a fraction of the cost. If your doctor prescribes a brand-name drug, ask if a more affordable generic alternative is available.
Taking the time to research your own treatment is an excellent way to ensure you will get the best available care at the best price.
Emergency room vs. urgent care
The emergency room is not always the best choice for care, even in cases of sudden illness or injury. It may be the only location that springs to mind, but there are other options.
Urgent care facilities can take care of most injuries and illnesses. Using these facilities helps avoid the high costs of ER visits. Patients are often treated more quickly at urgent care locations than they would be at crowded ERs.
Urgent care facilities often require preauthorization, so call your doctor’s office to learn about locations near you and to obtain other information you may need to use their services.
Your insurance company may not pay for an ER visit if it is not a true emergency.
Once you’ve determined the urgent care location closest to you, put its address and contact information on your refrigerator and in your wallet or purse and cell phone for easy access.
Of course, in a life-threatening situation, call 9-1-1 immediately or travel to an ER. But for all other care, know your options and take advantage of urgent care facilities.
