Among the many changes the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to our daily lives, the widespread use of telemedicine is one of the changes with the biggest impact.

Telemedicine uses many types of digital communication technologies (video chat, phone calls, texting, etc.) to connect patients with health care providers. It’s the safest way to treat most medical issues during the pandemic since it maintains social distance for both parties.

Outside of safety concerns, telemedicine also has value for rural communities where patients may not have nearby access to health care. As it becomes more common, it can help ease the patient burden at in-person health care facilities.

Whether you plan on scheduling your first telemedicine visit in the near future or just want to make the most out of your next visit, you can follow these tips to improve your experience:

Check your equipment

Before your appointment, ensure your Internet connection is strong, choose a quiet place free from distractions. If possible, be near a power supply to plug in your device if battery power becomes an issue. Use headphones or earbuds to further reduce any noise around you so you can hear your doctor’s instructions clearly.

Prepare your questions

Write down in advance your symptoms and any questions you need answered so you don’t forget anything. If you have pre-existing conditions or recent surgeries that may be applicable, mark those down as well.

Be flexible

Some problems are too serious to be treated via telemedicine and will require an in-person visit, as determined by your health care provider. Be prepared to take the precautions related to an in-person doctor visit, if necessary, to ensure your condition is not left untreated.
